oCOWrina | Ceramic, 2024

oCOWrina is a ceramic, raku fired, whistle. The whistle was completely handmade from a lump a clay. I shaped the whistle and then added the decorative elements to make it look like a cow. The white areas of the cow’s body are painted with a white crackle raku glaze. The black spots are areas of the clay that were painted with wax resist and left free of any glaze so that during the raku process the carbon from the fire could penetrate the clay and leave the black color. Why a cow? The cow shape was inspired by my 2-year-old son who loves to “moo” in our living room. I should have made a dinosaur though because he has since moved on to being obsessed with dinos.

Hannah is a staff member with the College of Pharmacy.
