Rebound | Stained Glass/Collage 2024
I am often influenced by movement and the natural world around me. I aim to move slowly in my time outdoors, hoping to notice something in each moment. As an artist, I have a tendency to bounce around between mediums, favoring stained glass, linocut prints and collage. Each of these formats is extremely tactile, as I deconstruct materials to create something new.
In Autumn 2024, I was taken out of my usual outdoor routine and unable to manage on my own for a period of time. This piece, a stained-glass cicada wing, was influenced by that recent period of turmoil and the surprising growth that accompanied it. Growth is not always what we expect and is often born of something unbecoming. Despite the grief that marked this experience, I’ve also found new parts of myself through it. I’ve come to view this period as parallel to the cicada. The insect is hard and unsettling, yet it is still considered a symbol of growth and rebirth.
I hope I’ll be out and about again this spring and hear the cicadas begin their song of the summer.
