Lying in Wait | Mixed Media, 2024
My mixed media and drawings expose the hidden and mundane things that are unseen but have immense impacts on everything that we do, and everything that we have been, and will become. The work captures my perspective of the minutia that shapes our very being. It is a surreal interpretation of the overlooked structures of our life.
This piece was inspired by DNA, the collection of on/off switches that makes us “us”. Specifically, this piece was inspired by Huntington’s Disease, a neurodegenerative mutation, hiding inside waiting to show its true nature. I contrast the “normal” strands, colorful and full of life, with the less colorful mutated gene to illustrate how this disease takes the color out of the lives of those unfortunate enough to carry it.
Art, like life, is about process. I use my art to help process my thoughts, confront problems, and work through them- Art as therapy. This piece is part of a series of drawings and paintings about facing the genetic legacy of my family.
